The blower wheel spins without moving air

The motor drives a plastic blower wheel that pulls air through the drum and pushes it out the duct. The cycle ends before the load is dry

Sometimes nothing is wrong with heat or airflow — the dryer simply quits early. Auto-dry programs trust a pair of sensor bars inside the drum, and when detergent and softener residue insulate those bars, the machine concludes the load is dry while your jeans are still soaked at the seams. The fingerprint: a cycle that ends suspiciously fast, while a timed cycle at the same heat dries the same load completely.

Heat keeps cutting out on the safety thermostat

Poor airflow overheats the heating chamber, and a high-limit thermostat cuts power to the element to prevent damage. The element then spends much of the cycle switched off, so clothes tumble in intermittently warm air and finish damp. You may notice the exhaust swinging between hot and cool — a rhythm that almost always traces back to restriction rather than a bad element.

Worn drum seals let the airflow bypass the clothes

Felt seals at the front and rear of the drum force incoming air to travel through the tumbling load. When the felt wears thin or tears, air takes the shortcut around the drum instead. Look for small scorch marks or gray smudges along the edges of garments and listen for scraping as the drum turns; both hint that the seal path is compromised.

The washer is sending the dryer an impossible job

If clothes go in dripping rather than merely damp, no healthy dryer finishes on schedule. A washing machine with a weak spin — worn clutch, failing bearings, unbalanced loads — quietly doubles the water the dryer must remove. Run a spin-only cycle on the washer and squeeze a towel afterward: it should feel damp, never wet enough to wring out.

Simple checks you can run at home

  1. Safety comes before curiosity. Disconnect the dryer from power before moving it or opening anything. On a gas dryer, never loosen or strain the gas line; if a check means moving the machine more than a few inches, stop and call a pro.
  2. Feel the airflow outside. Run the dryer on high and hold your hand at the exterior hood. Strong, warm, steady flow means the path is open; a weak puff means blockage; nothing at all points at the blower.
  3. Compare timed dry against auto dry. Same load, same heat setting. If timed dries and auto quits early, the sensor bars need cleaning — rubbing alcohol on a rag, thirty seconds.
  4. Check what the washer delivers. Spin a load and weigh a towel in your hand. Dripping laundry means the problem starts one appliance to the left.
  5. Look behind the machine. A transition duct folded into an S-shape traps moist air just as effectively as a lint clog.
  6. Sniff for mustiness. A sour smell in "dry" clothes confirms moisture is lingering through the cycle rather than leaving the drum.

When the diagnosis needs a technician

  • Heat is strong but exterior airflow stays weak after you have checked the duct — the restriction or blower fault is inside the cabinet.
  • The exhaust alternates hot and cold mid-cycle, which suggests the high-limit thermostat is doing the element's scheduling. Repeated overheating shortens element life.
  • You hear scraping, rumbling, or thumping along with the dampness.
  • Cleaning the sensor bars did not fix early shutdowns — the sensor circuit itself may be failing.
