Thermostats doing their job, or failing at it

Two matter here. The cycling thermostat regulates normal operating heat, and the high-limit thermostat is the emergency brake above it. A weak cycling stat lets temperatures swing high enough to trip the brake; an aging high-limit trips earlier and earlier on its own. Either way, the pattern is a machine that stops hot and runs again once cooled — the signature of a thermal shutdown.

A motor running hotter than it should

Drive motors carry an internal thermal protector of their own. When lint packs the blower housing or the motor's bearings drag, it overheats, the protector opens, and the dryer goes silent mid-cycle — then refuses to restart for twenty or thirty minutes. That mandatory cooling-off period is the tell that separates motor trouble from thermostat trouble.

The sensor and control family

Sensor-dry cycles judge dampness through two metal strips inside the drum. Dryer sheets and liquid softener leave an invisible waxy film on those strips, and a coated sensor reads “dry” while your towels are anything but — the cycle ends early in perfectly good faith. A door catch that vibrates open

A worn latch can let the door pop open mid-tumble, stopping the machine instantly — exactly as designed. You'll typically find the door slightly ajar after the mystery stop. Watch the first ten minutes of a cycle and you'll catch it in the act.

Control board and timer faults

When the stops are random — hot or cold, timed or sensor, five minutes or forty — suspect the control side: a board rebooting under vibration, a worn relay, a mechanical timer with tired contacts. These are the least common culprits and the most dependent on proper testing, which makes them terrible targets for guess-and-replace.

A safe way to test it yourself

  1. Pull the plug before cleaning anywhere inside the cabinet, and don't wrestle a gas dryer away from the wall — the flexible connector isn't built for that. Any gas smell means stop and call the utility, full stop.
  2. Wash the lint screen with dish soap and water: if water beads on the mesh instead of flowing through, softener film has been strangling airflow.
  3. Vacuum the lint-screen slot with a crevice tool. A startling amount of lint lives just below it.
  4. Wipe the two metal strips inside the drum with rubbing alcohol on a rag.
  5. Run a timed-dry load. Finishing on timed but quitting on sensor cycles convicts the sensor; quitting on both points at heat.
  6. Step outside during a cycle — the exhaust flap should blow open with obvious force. A limp flap means a duct problem.
  7. On an electric model, if the duct disconnects easily, run a short cycle with it detached (briefly, and never with gas). No shutdown means the duct is your culprit.
  8. Confirm the door closes with a firm click and can't be jiggled open.

When it's time for a technician

Thermostats, high-limits, and fuses need a meter to condemn honestly, and motors and boards aren't guessing territory either. Book a visit if the dryer trips its safety limits repeatedly — each trip means a margin got used up — if stops continue after the vent checks out clean, or if there's any burnt smell. A machine that shuts down hot is asking for attention, not patience.

Humidity, long duct runs, and Florida dryers

Florida hands dryers a double handicap. Intake air heavy with humidity carries away less moisture, so every load runs longer than the identical load would in a dry climate — more runtime, more lint, faster vent buildup. Then there's construction: plenty of newer Northeast Florida homes tuck the laundry room deep in the floor plan, with duct runs snaking twenty feet or more through the attic or up to a roof vent, and every elbow is a lint trap.
